Sanctuary Drive Bridge project in Kirtland Hills to begin

Sep 20, 2023

Lake County Engineer James R. Gills announced this week that the Sanctuary Drive Bridge project in Kirtland Hills is set to begin June 12.

The demolition of the bridge will require all traffic to follow the posted detour:

Baldwin Road to Chillicothe Road (state Route 615) to Kirtland-Chardon Road to Woodhill Road to Forestdale Drive to Westwood Road to Regency Woods Drive to Cardinal Drive

Construction is expected to be completed by Oct. 27, Gills said.

"The project, awarded to Tallmadge-based J.D. Williamson Construction Co., Inc., is receiving a rate of 80-20 percent match through the (County Engineers Association of Ohio's) Local Bridge funding program," he said, adding all engineering was conducted in-house. "The county is putting up about $350,000 of the total $1.8 million cost."

The work covered by the plans and specifications includes superstructure replacement with substructure repairs of the Sanctuary Drive Bridge over the East Branch of the Chagrin River.

According to Gills, the existing two spans of single-span pre-stressed, non-composite box beams will be replaced with a two-span continuous steel beam bridge, composite-reinforced concrete deck and semi-integral abutments on the existing substructure units.

Storm sewer updates and a new guardrail are also included.

Gills reiterated that the original design/planning and construction of the structure failed to meet standard specifications which led to its disrepair.

"This bridge was put together by a developer as part of a large subdivision and, unfortunately, it has had some problems," he said. "It became an emergency and we were lucky to get this on not only on the (County Engineers Association of Ohio) list, but it was (also) moved up so it could be completed sooner than expected."
