Construction worker flown to hospital after heavy steel beam falls onto him in Cary

A construction worker was flown to the hospital after he was left injured when a heavy steel beam fell onto him at a home under construction in Cary Wednesday morning.

The Cary Fire Protection District responded around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday to the 300 block of Haber Road in Cary for a report of a traumatic injury call.

Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said it was reported that a 300-400 pound steel beam had fallen onto a construction worker at the site.

Paramedics arrived within minutes and were directed to the adult male victim at the site of a new construction build.

Vucha said it was learned the I-beam collapsed on the first floor of the under-construction residence.

The beam had already been removed from the victim.

A LifeNet medical helicopter was requested due to the potential severity of his injuries, Vucha said.

The helicopter landed at the helipad at Mercyhealth Hospital in Crystal Lake.

An ambulance transported the victim to the helipad and the helicopter flew him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.

Vucha said that the man’s extent of injuries was not known at the time of transport as he still needed to be fully evaluated at the hospital.
