SURF, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory complete steel beam test | sodakpb

SURF and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory have completed the first test lift and lowering of a six-ton L-shaped steel beam.

The beam is being used for construction of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, or DUNE, in Lead.

SURF calls transporting the beam of steel “difficult” because it must travel a mile underground in an elevator-like cargo space. However, this successful test brings the development of the DUNE detector installation closer.

Once completed and operational, Fermilab’s Chicago campus will send a beam of neutrinos 800 miles through the earth to the DUNE in South Dakota.

This could help scientists understand the origin of matter in the universe.
